I’ve just read on John Dowdell’s blog that new statistics about Flash Player Version are out.
Seems that more than 80% of pc connected to Internet have Flash Player 8 installed, that in only 10 month!
See the Flash Player Statistics.

Nearly two month ago I published my Flash Stats Engine, now here are the result I get from it and the use of other stats engine. Data was gathered from more than 6000 different IP. On system that did already have Flash Player 7 installed and javascript enabled, this is the first bias. The second bias is the « kind of people » surfing on this site may be more up to date than average people on the web.

Flash Player & Javascript :

  • 90% of the user with have a version equal or bigger than 8.
  • 99% of user had javascript enabled.
  • Screens:

  • Most of the users (nearly 60%) have a screen resolution in X bigger or equal to 1280 px.
  • Most of the users (nearly 55%) have a screen resolution in Y bigger than 600 px but smaller than 1024. But 47% have a screen resolution in Y bigger than 1024.
  • Nearly 100% of users have a 72 DPI screen.
  • Only 1% of users have a resolution equal to 800×600.

Flash Player is the number one of Internet enabled PCs according a NPD Online survey published in December 2005.

  • Flash Player would be enabled in 97.7% of PCs
  • Acrobat Reader in 89.4%
  • Java in 86.2%
  • Media Player in 85.6%
  • Flash Player versions less than 5 are no longer measured. The sampling error for the NPD study is +/- 2% at the 95% confidence level.

The study measures Windows Media Player versions 7 and above using “.wmv” media files.

The first pre-result are out from my stats counter:

  • 87% have a Flash Player 8 (!)
  • 98% have a monitor DPI = 72
  • 55% have a resolution bigger or equal to 1280px
  • 56% have a resolution bigger or equal to 600px and under 1024px
  • 54% have accessibility on
  • 87% of Flash Player is quite impressive, but this stats is done with a Flash 7 swf, so all web user who don’t have FP7 won’t be include in the database.
I’ll soon (when my exams end) make a stat of the different FP who come on my site.

Still the same question for me, what about the Flash Player Penetration ?
Macromedia give a response here. But I didn’t found any other website giving information about it. It’s not that I don’t trust Macromedia nor Adobe, but i would like to have other source than them. Here are more information about their methodology :

2,000 participants, comprising a representative Internet sample responded to this survey. The study was evaluated at a 95% significance confidence level, (5% risk).[...]

The actual statistic that I got are not so much trustable because to few people come on my website, and this statistic is far to young to be interpretable anyway.
