    Adobe Thermo logo
Adobe has presented yesterday their new upcoming product codenamed “Thermo”.

[...]Thermo allows designers to build on familiar workflows to visually create working applications that easily flow into production and development. [...]
Applications created in Thermo are Flex applications that can be loaded directly into Flex Builder, providing a great roundtrip workflow for designers collaborating with developers. The designer’s work can be incorporated directly into the production application with no loss of fidelity, and designers can continue to refine the design throughout the iterative development process.[...]

Here is what we could do with Thermo:

  • Use drawing tools to create original graphics, wireframe an application design, or manipulate artwork imported from Adobe Creative Suite tools.
  • Turn artwork from Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, or Fireworks directly into functional components that use the original artwork as a “skin”.
  • Define and wire up interactive behavior, such as what to do when a user clicks on something, without having to write code.
  • Easily design UIs that work with dynamic data, such as a list of contacts or product information, without having access to the actual data source. Design-time sample data can be used as a realistic placeholder when laying out an application, testing interactivity, and choreographing motion.
  • Here are some screenshots:

Thermo should be released in 2008.

This result surprised me, really. I thought that it would be much higher. I understand that it is not a worldwide statistics but app. 1/5 of top 5000 sites using Flash is really not a good sign or is it?
Hard to find information to compare Flash against other technologies, maybe because Flash is quite alone on this market? Silverlight, want to compete with Flash but it represents only 0.08% of the top 5000 website (ok they are too young on the market). We could also think about Javascipt / Ajax to build the same user experience but I couldn’t find any stats about the use of Javascript on top websites.
We could try to analyze this from the user point of view. Adobe claims that 90% of the web users on mature market have Flash Player 9 installed (in June 2007) and 99% got Flash Player 7 installed. That might lead us to think Flash is very commonly used on the web, but cannot inform us about the top website. For Javascript, the penetration is 96% (4% don’t have Javascript in September 2007).

Final conclusion, with a so deep penetration of the Flash Player we can only be happy to develop for the Flash Player ;)

Photshop Cs2 snapshootMonday at the Nomades (IT school in Geneva), I’ll be giving Photoshop CS2 lessons. It’s already the third time I teach an Adobe technologies. My first time was with Flash, my second time with Premiere Pro and now Photoshop. I feel myself very lucky to be able to change the topic at each time (even if it’s more work). Really if you once got the opportunities to give lessons, don’t hesitate it’s great, and as a student, that I am, it helps pass the frustration to be always the one that learn from others ;p

So if you are in Geneva (Switzerland), speak French, and want to learn Photoshop call the Nomades(+41 22 328 07 70) ASAP.
